Railways of British Columbia - List of Incorporations
List of nearly 200 railway incorporations in British Columbia with approved routing, from the legislation, and capsule legal histories.
Most of the information is derived from A Statutory History of the Steam and Electric Railways of Canada 1836-1937 (Canada: Department of Transport, 1938).
Railways can often be found marked and named on old maps and other documents bearing names that have long passed into history. They may have only been proposals that never built any track or they may have been railways that later passed into the hands of competitors. The details come directly from the legislation itself.
Also includes bridge, tunnel or ferry company incorporations where rail traffic might be carried, plus street railways and mining tramways.

The 1927 Defunct Railways Act
Railway modellers seeking a name for their B.C.-based operations might draw inspiration from the companies listed in the Defunct Railway Companies Dissolution Act, passed by the provincial legislature in 1927.
How about Rainy Hollow Railway? Rock Bay and Salmon River Railway? North Star and Nelson Railway?
All these were railways proposed by hopeful investors in the province's early years.
Given Royal Assent on March 7, 1927, the Act declared that the companies listed in its Schedule A "shall, for all purposes, be deemed to be dissolved; and all powers and franchises held by the said corporations respectively are hereby declared to have wholly ceased."
Altogether, the Act wiped out 128 railway companies incorporated in B.C. in the 45 years since 1882, many of these representing operations that had never broken ground, let alone turned a wheel. It also repealed the separate statutes concerning five other companies.
In many cases, the names of these proposed railways denote the territory their backers hoped to serve, these ambitions often being quite fanciful in light of the difficult terrain the lines would have had to surmount.
What drove their promoters to seek a charter in the face of such challenges?
As Bruce Ramsey writes in his history titled PGE: Railway to the North, "There were many benefits to be gained by having a railway charter; you might be able to sell out to a larger company or obtain land grants and government subsidies."
But most of these schemes went nowhere after gaining their charters, leading the Liberal government of Premier Simon Fraser Tolmie to erase them from the statute books.
All told, almost 200 railways were chartered in B.C.'s formative years, in some cases being inter-provincial schemes that were granted federal charters. A listing compiled by Derek Hayes can be found at a website of the B.C. Historical Federation (as above). It provides a brief description of the proposed routes of each company, including most of those listed here.
The following list is derived directly from Schedule A of the 1927 Act, containing the names of 122 railway companies and their year of incorporation. Six of these are duplicates in cases where a company received two charters under the same name by different statutes at different times; those are indicated by the dual charter dates. In Schedule A, these duplications are listed separately, thus amounting to 128 companies in total.
